How Our Dermatologist Founder Created and Developed Loma Lux Laboratories
| 07Nov2019Loma Lux Laboratories was originally born out of the research and development of a new treatment for psoriasis at the dermatology practice of Steven A. Smith, M.D. Dr. Smith developed a special interest in psoriasis when he began his dermatology training in 1979. Psoriasis was then, and is now, still difficult to treat. Treatments have traditionally been expensive, and have considerable side effects. Often a treatment that benefited one patient had no effect on another. In 1985, Dr. Smith began a search for a new, reliable, and inexpensive psoriasis treatment, free of side effects.
Researching the scientific and medical literature available, Dr. Smith focused his study on trace mineral therapy. The research eventually led to the investigation of two minerals – bromide and nickel. He found an abundance of information about these natural substances, but little on their application to skin diseases. As a combination of bromide and nickel for the treatment of psoriasis remained untested, Dr. Smith initiated his own research. His patients saw clearing and relief. Scientifically controlled studies validated the effectiveness and safety of this low dose combination mineral treatment for psoriasis.
During the course of his research, Dr. Smith noted that patients with related skin inflammatory indications such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and acne also showed substantial improvement.
In 1994, Dr. Smith expanded his research further, into the science of homeopathy. Following the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States and various Materia Medica, Dr. Smith reformulated his medicines from allopathic to homeopathic. Along with the core minerals of sodium bromide, potassium bromide and nickel sulfate, Dr. Smith added additional minerals homeopathically proven for their effectiveness in treating acne, eczema, dandruff and psoriasis.
The new formulations had impressive results in clinical use. Placebo-controlled studies verified their effectiveness. A United States Patent was granted on the use of nickel and bromide compounds to treat psoriasis, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
While Dr. Smith sold the company in 2014 to focus on his dermatology practice, he continues to influence Loma Lux Laboratories as a medical advisor and thought leader
