How A Mediterranean Diet Can Relieve Inflammation & Improve Your Skin
| 10Jul2019According to functional medicine experts, you are what you eat. Junk food, sugar, and overly processed foods can wreak havoc with your skin. By improving your diet, you can improve your overall health, including your skin.
Relieve Acne, Eczema & Psoriasis with a Healthy Diet
Believe it or not, but Acne, Eczema, and Psoriasis are related. They are all considered a skin inflammatory disorder. Inflammatory skin diseases are the most common diseases treated by dermatologists. They can range from occasional rashes (contact dermatitis) that are inflamed and can itch to chronic (long-lasting) diseases such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
How Inflammation Affects Skin Health
Inflammation (redness, pain) on the skin surface is the body’s healing response, bringing more nourishment to the site of inflammation. Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response, without it, we can’t heal. In the case of skin inflammatory diseases, the body’s inflammation response can actually damage the skin, resulting in acne, eczema & psoriasis.
Research suggests that a nutrient-poor diet will increase inflammation, while a healthy diet of anti-inflammatory foods will help improve your skin.
The key to healthy, clear, inflammation-free skin is anti-inflammatory foods.
So what are anti-inflammatory foods? The Cleveland Clinic states that an anti-inflammatory diet is basically a Mediterranean style diet rich with fresh foods that include a rainbow of colorful fruit and vegetables, healthy fats/proteins and whole grains.
Here are some basics of a Mediterranean style diet:
While there is no single diet plan, it is based upon the foods traditionally eaten in the countries that border the Mediterranean. According to the Mayo Clinic “The foundation of the diet is vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, and whole grains”.
The staples include regular use of healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish. The foods are delicious and easy to make. Give it a try for six to twelve weeks to see how it helps you.
Healthy Fats That Are Good For You:
Instead of traditional cooking oils, use healthy oils such as olive oil. Additional healthy vegetable fats are avocadoes, olives, nuts, nut butter, flaxseed, and even dark chocolate.
Eat cold water fish two to three times per week instead of red meats. They contain Omega 6 & Omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in the body.
Fruits & Vegetables Are High In Anti-Oxidants
Try a selection of fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors, the more colorful, the better. Get healthy by eating six to eight servings of veggies and two to three servings of fruit daily. Instead of desserts, choose fruit.
Some of the fruits & veggies high in anti-oxidants are berries, citrus fruits, bell peppers and bright leafy greens like spinach and arugula.
Whole Grains Instead of Refined Flours & Grains
Carbs are best eaten in moderation. Choose healthy whole grains like whole wheat, oats, quinoa, brown rice instead of white rice, while barley and rye grains provide healthy goodness and fiber to keep you feeling full.
Avoid Inflammatory Foods
If you aren’t ready to start a whole new way of eating, start with small steps. Eliminate inflammatory foods such as processed meats, margarine, fried foods and processed snacks. Limit sugary foods and drinks. If you get a sweet tooth, switch from sugary desserts to a small portion of dark chocolate or fruit.
